I'm a newbie so be nice! I was wondering about FA Cup eligibility. I was looking at last year's table and saw the top 4 teams either getting into the Champions Cup or CC Qualifiers. But the FA cup confused me. I understand why Spurs and Blackburn got in. Why did West Ham get in instead of either Newcastle or Bolton, both teams that finished ahead of West Ham, and had better goal differentials? Thanks!I believe that Sam Allerdyce said that Bolton would need have need to get to the UEFA Cup semis, minimum, to even break even on traveling expenses etc, when they played in it the other season. As well as the UEFA Cup being a joke of a comptition there is little or no money in it.
And yet again we are being tipped by many to return to "were we belong" and the UEFA Cup would cause a distraction to trying to stay up. I dont think Europe is the be-all and end-all of players coming here though. Landzaat turned down UEFA Cup football with both Espanyol and AZ and Cywka turned down Chamopns League football with Munich. You don't have to qualify for the FA Cup. It's open to any club in England.
That's not entirely true - there are ground grading requirements (most importantly floodlights, I think) that exclude a number of clubs in levels 9 and 10 of the pyramid. Also, I don't think clubs below level 10 are allowed to enter, although they can enter the FA Vase if they have floodlights. The exception to this is the South Western League, which is extremely strong for it's level.
I only mention this because the FA Cup contrasts with Coupe de France in some ways. The Coupe is not as famous as the FA Cup, but in includes pretty much anyone who wants to play, including small time park league teams and even clubs from overseas territories! The Uefa cup's crap. The teams are hardly anything to get excited about, and you have the knowledge in the back of your mind that's you're playing in a tournament that no-one cares about.Jewell hates the Intertoto Cup. Its a shambles really. It's not like we need the money through Europe and the players needed, and deserved, more than 3 weeks off before being dragged back into training to play some team that the local pub side would beat.
But in the end couldn't a good UEFA Cup run mean good money for the club? And don't players want Europe? I do think it's a little weird to turn down Europe, in any formRegarding the Intertoto Cup ...
How far down the table do they go seeking willing participants? It seems England gets two spots in the competition, but only Newcastle participated this year. I understand why the previous format was disdainful to some clubs because it could disrupt preseason training. But this now seems like a really easy way into the UEFA Cup -- for Newcastle it was one two-legged matchup with an also-ran from a weaker league. Would the other England team, being lower in the standings, have been required to play an extra round?
SORRY ... found the answer ... clubs must be in the four positions immediately behind the automatic qualifiers. Which means Bolton, Wigan and Everton would have declined. ... Surprised that Wigan didn't accept.I love uefa cup nighs, entertainment without the intensity of the cl and its stiffling importance. Lots of fun matches, very few dirty matches, nothing too much at stake, and a lot of attacking football, players trying to make names for themselves, rather than the creme de la creme who have already made their fortunes. Also you get to see a lot of older pros that you thought you wouldnt get to see playing again. Anyway, it is a million times better than the league cup, which is the true definition of a joke tournament.Ok - so then let me rephrase the question. Why did only Spurs, West Ham and Blackburn play for the UEFA cup and Newcastle and Bolton decide not to? Or did Newcastle and Bolton get eliminated in an earlier round? As a fan of American sports, all the external cup competitions are very confusing to me. Thanks!Ok - so then let me rephrase the question. We didn't decide not to enter the UEFA cup. It's the fact that we finished 7th in the Premiership table when only the teams that finish 5th and 6th as well as the FA Cup finalists (West Ham) that also qualified because Liverpool had already qualified for the Champions league.
Newcastle have infact qualifed for the UEFA cup because we have qualified via the Intertoto Cup.I'm a newbie so be nice! I was wondering about FA Cup eligibility. Well, yea, there are exceptions and I believe that lower league teams play earlier qualifying rounds than championship or premier league clubs, but generally speaking, it's open to all clubs.
Moot point, anyways. I misunderstood what he was asking. Thanks - that makes some sense. I figured that Newcastle didn't "decide" not to play, I just couldn't figure out how all that worked out. Thanks for the clarification - knowing stuff like this will make watching so much more enjoyable!http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FA_Premier_League_2005-06Jewell hates the Intertoto Cup. The winners of the FA Cup go into the UEFA Cup, unless they've qualified for the CL (as Liverpool did) in which case the runners up get the UEFA Cup spot.
Gretna in Scotland are in the UEFA Cup for the same reason, after losing to Hearts.#If you have any other info about this subject , Please add it free.# |
