dogs that dont shed and dont have doggy smell?'

  • Question: parents have raised a maltese for almost 8 years. we found that malteses really suit us because (1) their hair doesnt fall out and that (2)they dont have a doggy smell. I am looking for a pet dog for myself and have been attending local dog shows. it seems everyone has their opinion on this matter and tells me different things. I am hoping to get the facts from you. please tell me which other dog breeds have these two special qualities. CRISTAL

  • Hi cristalb, Below is a list of dogs that fit both your criteria. I think it is fairly complete. There are a couple I left off, only because I could not conclusively fit them into your "both" criteria. **************************************************************************** Dogs with no "dog odor" that shed very little or not at all: Basenji http://www.bestfriendspetcare.com/dog_grooming/dog-grooming-Basenji.cfm ..."The Basenji has no dog smell and, in fact, grooms itself very much like a cat. This breed also sheds little to no hair and often makes a good choice of pet for people prone to allergies. Very little grooming is required with the Basenji..." **************************************************************************** Giant Schnauzer http://www.bestfriendspetcare.com/dog_grooming/dog-grooming-GiantSchnauzer.cfm ..."The Giant Schnauzer has a stiff, wiry coat that sheds little to no hair and doesn't produce a doggie odor..." **************************************************************************** The Sighthounds: Greyhound http://www.bestfriendspetcare.com/dog_grooming/dog-grooming-Greyhound.cfm ..." The Greyhound is an average shedder with a short, fine coat..." (I disagree, I have owned two and there was little to no shedding. If you brush them when the weather changes from cold to warm, you will catch all the winter coat shedding in less than a week--and have virtually no shedding at all the remaining 51 weeks a year.) Italian Greyhound http://www.bestfriendspetcare.com/dog_grooming/dog-grooming-ItalianGreyhound.cfm ..." The Italian Greyhound has a fine, silky coat that sheds little to no hair..." http://www.hoflin.com/BR/Italian%20Greyhounds ..."coat sheds little hair and has almost no odor..." Azawakhs http://www.dogguide.net/azawakh.php ..."They do not shed. Azawakhs do not need frequent baths, as they have no dog odor..." Pharaoh Hound http://www.bestfriendspetcare.com/dog_grooming/dog-grooming-PharaohHound.cfm ..." The Pharaoh Hound is an average shedder with a short, shiny, somewhat coarse coat. Though these dogs are very clean and don't have any dog odor..." Peruvian Inca Orchid (Also in HAIRLESS) http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/peruvianincaorchid.htm ..."This is a very clean breed with no doggie odor..." **************************************************************************** The Hairless Breeds: (in general, the hairless breeds don't have a dog odor) Mexican Hairless (Xoloitzcuintli) http://www.horses-n-dogs.com/Dog%20Breeds/mexicanhairless.htm ..." The Mexican Hairless have no dog odor and are an excellent pet for allergy sufferers..." American Hairless Terrier http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/americanhairlessterrier.htm ..." This breed is very good for allergy sufferers. Many AHT breeders have experiences , doing hands on and remote allergy tests with people who have allergic responses to dogs and more often than not, individuals who can not tolerate even those breeds who are known to be 'hypoallergenic'... can tolerate an AHT..." Chinese Crested http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/chinesecrested.htm ..." Chinese Crested are very clean, with no doggie odor..." http://www.bestfriendspetcare.com/dog_grooming/dog-grooming-ChineseCrested.cfm ..." The Chinese Crested comes in two varieties, hairless and powderpuff. Both are very clean dogs with no doggie odor and very little shedding..." Peruvian Inca Orchid (Also in Sighthounds) http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/peruvianincaorchid.htm ..." This is a very clean breed with no doggie odor..." Hairless Khala http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/hairlesskhala.htm **************************************************************************** GoldenDoodles http://www.bearinggoldfarm.com/ (This is a specific breeder that looks good) ..." Low to no shedding - Low to no dog odor - Nearly hypoallergenic..." **************************************************************************** Silky Terrier http://www.bestfriendspetcare.com/dog_grooming/dog-grooming-SilkyTerrier.cfm ..." The Silky Terrier has a glossy, fine, straight coat that sheds little to no hair..." (also note this is a high-maintenance coat) http://www.gopetsamerica.com/silky-terrier/silky-terrier.aspx ..." Silkie's coat is believed hypoallergenic and does not have an odor common in many other dog breeds..." **************************************************************************** Havanese http://www.katyshavanese.com/ ..."Havanese are long haired, non shedding dogs, with no dog odor..." http://www.bestfriendspetcare.com/dog_grooming/dog-grooming-Havanese.cfm ..." The Havanese has a double coat that sheds little to no hair, particularly if brushed regularly..." http://www.bestfriendspetcare.com/dog_grooming/dog-grooming-Havanese.cfm **************************************************************************** Poodles (high-maintenance grooming is necessary) http://www.bestfriendspetcare.com/dog_grooming/dog-grooming-Poodle.cfm ..."Both Miniature and Standard Poodles have a dense, curly coat with a fine, wooly texture. They shed little to no hair..." http://www.bestfriendspetcare.com/dog_grooming/dog-grooming-toyPoodle.cfm ..."Toy Poodle: Because this breed sheds little to no hair, they are often a good choice for people prone to allergies..." http://www.teacuppoodles.net/ ..."Poodles do not shed and are hypo-allergenic, so people with allergies can own a poodle. Poodles have no dander, fur, or odor..." **************************************************************************** Maltese (for a complete list) http://www.bestfriendspetcare.com/dog_grooming/dog-grooming-Maltese.cfm ..."The Maltese has a long, silky coat that sheds little to no hair, making it a good choice for people prone to allergies..." (Your personal epperience speaks for the lack of doggie odor!) **************************************************************************** These last two are not on any list of both non-shedders AND no-dog-odor, but I think you could consider them as they both shed very little _IF_ you are careful to select one with a very short coat--look at the parents. Neither has a dog odor: Chihuahua http://www.bestfriendspetcare.com/dog_grooming/dog-grooming-Chihuahua.cfm The short-haired variety shed less than the long haired, and neither has a doggie odor. Boston Terrier http://www.bestfriendspetcare.com/dog_grooming/dog-grooming-BostonTerrier.cfm ..."The Boston Terrier is an average shedder with a smooth, short coat..." (My brother owns a Boston Terrier, he sheds very little, same as the sighthounds with a very short coat. He smells divine--no kidding!) **************************************************************************** Other References: The Non-Shedding Dog http://www.bestfriendspetcare.com/pet_facts/non-sheddingdog.cfm An interesting read. I hope this list will help you select your next beloved pet! ~~Cynthia Search terms used at Google: "no dog smell OR odor" breeds "does not shed" OR "non-shedding" OR "little shedding" OR "sheds little" hairless dog breeds
