1972 is the year that a novel idea became a unique school. Stratton Mountain School was founded by Warren Hellman and Donald Tarinelli so that their own children and a handful of others could train and compete in high level alpine skiing without interrupting their high school education. Top coaches and excellent teachers were recruited to join in the new program, with parents providing the housing. As the idea caught on with more families, SMS purchased and occupied an old ski lodge, where the school grew in numbers of students, programs and reputation. In 1999, the school moved to its present location, a newly constructed campus on ten beautiful acres at the base of Stratton Mountain. With the completion in 2005 of new faculty housing, additional dorm space and the new state-of-the-art athletic facility, SMS compares to New England’s finest independent schools, providing learning, living and training opportunities second to none. From the beginning, SMS graduates have attended the country’s finest colleges. Many join NCAA teams at Dartmouth, Middlebury, Williams, Colby, Boston College, Bates, Bowdoin, UVM and UC Boulder, to name some of these top programs. Over 100 of our alumni have been named to U.S. National Teams and 28 have participated in Winter Olympics plus 2 in Summer Olympic Games. They include two Gold Medal winners, a Silver Medalist, a Bronze Medalist and several top ten placements. We are proud of them all. From that first handful of young student athletes, dedicated coaches and teachers, SMS is
