Why does my dog eat poop?? It's disgusting!?

I have a 3 yr old healthy pug that eats any poop she stumbles upon. (hers, and other dogs) We clean hers up immediately when we see her go, but sometimes she has accidents we don't catch right away and sure enough, she is eating it when we discover her! According to the vet she is the ideal weight. AM & PM we feed her very high quality food, Wellness Core, and also fresh fruit and veggies... She gets plenty of attention, daily walks, and a huge box full of toys. We don't know why she does this! Because dogs are gross. Seriously. No one knows why dogs do this. In dogs that are living in squalid conditions it is suspected that they may do it in an attempt at drawing more nutrition or out of boredom. But vets do not have a scientific explanation as to why so many perfectly healthy well cared for dogs also do this. About the only thing I can offer you is the knowledge that you are not alone in this as many otherwise perfect dogs eat their own poop (and all dogs seem to like to eat the feces of other species).

I heard they eat it because they are low on the nutrients they need. However it could be several other reasons. Check out this website

Think about it. Dogs were originally cave animals, the lowest in the pack had to clean the cave. How do you think they cleaned caves with out a broom and mop? She also might not be getting enough nutrients. You should call the vet and consult him.

One of my dogs used to do that too. I agree, it's really disgusting to watch. Just recently heard that dogs who do this may lack a digestive enzyme. Not sure whether to believe that or not.
