Online auction giant eBay reached out to brick and mortar retail behemoth Wal-Mart Stores to hire away its senior vice-president and chief technology officer, Matt Carey. He joins the company officially on Feb. 1, 2006 with the position of chief technology officer and senior vice president for eBay Marketplaces.
During his over twenty year tenure at Wal-Mart, Carey directed the development and execution of the company's technology strategy, supporting the opening of more than 350 new stores and distribution centers around the globe on an annual basis. Carey currently serves on advisory boards for Hewlett-Packard,, Dell and IBM..
Carey succeeds Lynn Reedy, who announced in October her intention to leave San Jose, Calif-based eBay. The company said Reedy played an integral role in shepherding the growth of the eBay platform over the past six years, most recently as CTO of eBay Marketplaces Product & Technology.

Separately, another San Jose, Calif.-based firm made an executive appointment this week. Network General's board of directors named Bill Gibson as CEO. Network General is a leading provider of enterprise application and network performance analysis products.
Gibson was most recently COO at Crystal Decisions where he more than doubled the company's revenues in three years during its transition to an enterprise software provider. He has over 33 years experience in business intelligence software, computing and telecommunications.
During his tenure at Crystal Decisions, Gibson secured major alliances with SAP, IBM and PeopleSoft, and drove worldwide agreements with major system integrators and more than 700 OEM partners.
"Network General is in an enviable position," said Gibson in a statement.
"The company has the strongest portfolio of network and application performance analysis solutions on the market, a loyal customer base of more than 13,000 and the strongest brand in the industry."
